Timelines vs ATracker

Looking for an ATracker alternative?

Timelines and ATracker are both personal time trackers for iPhone and Apple Watch, and on paper they do many of the same things. The difference is in how they feel to use.

Timelines is built to be simple and reliable. Starting a timer takes one tap, your day shows up on a timeline you can read at a glance, and starting a subcategory or fixing a time takes seconds. ATracker runs on more platforms and is available in more languages.

We make Timelines, so we’re not neutral, but we’ve tried to keep this comparison fair.

Designed to stay out of your way

A time tracker only helps if you keep using it. That’s why we’ve spent years making the everyday things in Timelines take as few taps as possible, so that tracking never turns into a chore.

Naming a new event in Timelines on iPhone: Planning is picked from the recent names shown above the keyboard

Name what you’re doing as you start

Want to know which project or which book took your time? Timelines can ask for a name each time you start a timer. Pick one of your recent names, or type a few letters to find it, and tap the checkmark. With PRO, you can then see how your time splits between those names.

Timelines widgets on an iPhone Home Screen: daily goals, today’s pie chart and a grid of timers with Work running

Track without opening the app

Start and stop timers from a widget on your Home Screen or Lock Screen, from Control Center, or with the Action button. While a timer runs, the Live Activity keeps it in view in the Dynamic Island and on your Lock Screen, with a button to stop it.

A day on the Timelines timeline, from 9 am to 9 pm, with each event as a colored block

Zoom from minutes to years

Your time is laid out as colored blocks on a timeline. Zoom in to see a single day hour by hour, or out to see your whole week, month or year. Your statistics follow along: the pie chart always shows the day, week or month you’ve zoomed to.

A full app on your wrist

Timelines has been on Apple Watch since 2016. Unlike ATracker, it works fully on its own. Leave your iPhone behind when you go for a run or into a meeting, and you can still:

  • start and stop timers right from your watch face
  • name what you’re doing or add a note, by voice
  • fix a late start or an early stop with the Digital Crown
  • check your statistics

With PRO, everything you track on your watch syncs to your iPhone and iPad.

Which one should you pick?

ATracker may suit you better if:

  • You use Android, or want to track in a web browser. Timelines only runs on Apple devices for now. You can join the Android waitlist to hear when that changes.
  • You like having lots of controls. ATracker has a setting for almost everything, and its Report tab has more than a dozen controls for charts, periods and averages.
  • You’d like the app in your own language. ATracker is available in 19 languages. Timelines is in English for now, with more languages on the way.

Timelines may suit you better if:

  • You’ve tried time trackers before, and none of them stuck. Many people say in their reviews that Timelines is the first one they kept using. Your timers are always one tap away.
  • You want just enough features, not a dashboard. From starting a timer to looking back at your week, everything in Timelines is kept simple.
  • You want to see where your time actually goes. Your day shows up in color on a timeline, so you can read it at a glance.
  • You don’t always remember to start or stop a timer. That’s fine: you can fix the time in seconds, or add what you missed later.
  • You wear an Apple Watch and want more than a start button. Fix times with the Digital Crown, add notes by voice and check your statistics, even without your iPhone.

You can try Timelines for free, no account needed.
